THE SILVERDALE HOW SHIELD
THE PRESIDENTS REPORTS Thursday the 19th of Dec 2002. I have just got back from the Special General meeting which was held at our club room where it was agreed we sell the club room with the sale to be completed by January 2003 ( see full report in this or next DLN ) Don White, our past President and one of the instigators of the building of our club room, wanted it noted in the minutes that the club members would like to thank Peter Harris our club secretary, for his work in this transaction. Also thanking the members of our club who put so much work in building of the premises. Due to the above, the club is in a healthy financial position. What we do with the money is the next stage. Watch this space. The committee agreed that we should have a last fling in the club room, so we have arranged a 'Last Supper'. This will be the same format as our Belgium night. We will have a sit down do with a three course meal. As much wine as you want ( if you are not driving ) and all for £10 per head. How do we do it you ask? Well Brian Saxton sold the billiard table and of course we have the services of Cliff and Carol in the kitchen, bless them. As a memento of the club room you will be allowed to keep the knives and forks! You will be waited on hand and foot and pampered by our super fast waiters, if they can keep sober that is! The only problem we have is that we can only
sit about 40 people, so it will be first come first served. Each member will be
allowed to bring one guest. We will have cross toasting (keep it clean) for
people who do not want to eat, we will have a bar. The sit down meal is 7.00 for
7.30. So remember, first come, first served. Phone or e-mail me and let me know your requirements (are you a vegetarian?) Kav. PS What happened to the down hill gliders? No one turned up but Terry. I know it was a lousy day, cold and wet, but this would not have happened in my day, mumble mumble. I hope you realise that we had our first team supporters out from the old people's home to give you support! Saxton, Dodsy, Savery, Peel, Don, Beryl and I. Because it was so cold we were forced, yes forced in to the pub to drink the lunatic's broth and eat food. It was hell. PSS Did you know that Mike Peel has got a new Canon camera. Well you cannot miss it as he flashing and letting them off all day, pictures that is! He went to Rome last month and took pictures of the Pope (see picture)
Subject: Doug Williams - Ealing Manor and Calleva RC I looked at your web site with a particular interest in the historical sections which were excellent. My father, Doug Williams, was a very active time triallist before and after the 2nd World War and enjoyed considerable success. He has a large collection of beautifully detailed cycling medals from places in team events, these medals being a feature of events of this time. He had many team wins but only a small number of individual triumphs and, according to his records (he died a couple of years ago) possibly his best win came in the De Laune CC 100 time trial. He won this event with a time of 4 hours 37 minutes which must have been highly respectable for the time, although a number of London area crack riders of the day were absent. I am not sure of the year, but it must have been just before or just after the 2nd World War as my father served abroad for 6.5 years in the army, most likely it was around the 1946-48 period. Before the War, he was with the Ealing Manor club joining the Calleva RC in 1946 until his retirement from competitive cycling at the end of the 1948 season, when he was well placed in the BAR. With the Calleva, he was a team mate of Albert Derbyshire, the 3 time BAR champion of the post war years and won many team events during this time. Derbyshire set the new competition record for the 100 during this time with 4 hours 17 minutes. My father also knew prominent cyclists like Arch Harding (Middx Road Club) and Gerry Waters (Kentish Wheelers) very well at this time and for many years later. My reason for writing is to see if you can confirm the above information and the year of my father's success in your event. If, in your archives, you have any more information, I would naturally be interested. Many thanks and best regards Bruce HJ Williams CYCLO CROSS NEWS Rankings after 10 events at 22/11/02, but with 7 counted at this time Note: Best 9 Results from 15 Rounds will

Round nine of the 2002/2003 Mosquito/Kinesis London Cyclo-Cross League held at Hillingdon, London on December 8. Organised by Hounslow & District CC. After completing a lap of the road circuit Team Y2K rider Jody Crawford led the field onto the dirt. Crawford wasted no time in establishing a lead and at the end of lap 2 he was away with a group made up of Mick Bell (London Fire Brigade), Ian Field (San Fairy Ann), Warrick Spence (Bikepark.co.uk), Matt Holmes (Arctic 2002/Shortford) and a French rider (we wrote his name down, but we lost it, he was one of two racing) a handful of seconds down. Just off this group were Steven Price (De Laune CC) and Ben Lockwood (Invicta CC). Field lost contact when he punctured twice in successive laps whilst Crawford seemed to be romping to victory, but in a flurry of action Spence attacked and Crawford punctured. When Crawford had rejoined the race he was just a few seconds ahead of Spence who had a good lead over the rest. The French bloke and Holmes had in turn prised themselves off the chase leaving Bell to ride to the Veterans category alone. Spence muttered that his legs had gone and he responded when told that he had got close to the leader. Crawford in turn reacted and pulled out a few more seconds to win with Spence some 20 seconds down. Holmes had pulled ahead of the French fella to take 3rd. Once more we saw a race that contained many great battles for London League Points. 1. Jody Crawford (Team Y2K) I finished 29th which I was very pleased, top 30 was my aim. The race was a complete mud fest with incessant rain which didn't stop until I was warm and dry that evening. This was my one and only trophy race of the year I quickly realised what a huge step up it is from the weekly London League jaunts, the speed was phenomenal in spite of the conditions. I now look forward to the national champs and take a lot of confidence from this result. If I can achieve top 20 in Birmingham I will be over the moon. http://www.londoncyclesport.com/x_reports/x_nat_trophy_5_reports_02.html, check out the link for the full report and a load more very muddy pics. Last Sunday I finished 6th at the London league held at Hillingdon added to the win I gained at round 10 of the south west league. For what its worth I'm now racing up the national rankings from 194 the month before to joint 82. Steven
