THE PRESIDENTS REPORTS The closure of Herne Hill track is a blow to us all, especially people who live in the south of England. The situation is that the Southwark Council cannot agree terms for the new lease with the site’s owners, The Dulwich Estate. I am informed that the Good Friday meeting will be held with other special meetings at later dates. Where do the local riders train in the mean time? Way back in the 50’s and 60’s before I moved from London to Maidstone, Herne Hill was my life; Going down to the track for Monday night comp, the club open meetings on Wednesdays and the big meetings at the weekends. The situation was that everybody went down to the track and not just to race. Great memories of the place will never fade. We had our own track cabin and I can remember Tommy Simpson selling his old racing vests from the cabin door. I can also remember the great Fausto Coppi riding in a Madison and hanging on the barrier, (only inches from me) waiting for his partner to come around. I will let you into a secret -I touched his hand! (I always thought there was something funny about you Ed.) If we loose the track, what problems will we have as a club? Do we loose our club night and our storage space for our club equipment? Do we have a club track championship this year and, to make matters worse, will our own Bill Wright, who is the manager for the track, loose his job? A lot of questions will have to be asked. I am always asking for new people to help out with our clubs activities (please do not put the DLN down but read on!) We have a situation in most cases that we cannot say who does what job. As a team we just get on with it, but I must point out one guy who is doing a Ken Hill on us! Ken was called Mr. Herne Hill in his time. He did everything from running big open events to washing up the cups. This member is going the same way! He is the Clothing Manager. The Property Secretary, Membership Secretary, Club Historian, Road Sign Direction Board Manager. He has now found the ‘on’ button on his new computer and is writing articles for DLN. Is this man taking over the club I ask? Yes it is Stax. Keep up the good work kid. I do not know what we would do with-out you! I am glad to tell you that all the Dc Laune ski team came back safe and sound from l'Alpe d'Huez, France, which is good considering they are pushing 70 and some are over 70. The weather was good with plenty of snow. We had one morning with a white-out. Let me explain a white-out is when you get a lot of snow coming down with a white fog, so you cannot tell the ground from the sky. The result is you cannot keep your balance and keep falling over. Tich Shambrook had a problem with the white-out, and he is lucky to be with us. He was told that if he got into a white-out, stand still until it passed by because of the dangerous crevasses. If you do decide to move, and he did, you take your skies off and prod your way with your ski stick. He did this for twenty minutes solid with his stick He did the best thing and did not move for two hours until the white fog lifted. Guess what! His stick had broken off at the handle. Kav. PS I have enclosed a photo of part of the De Laune ski team with a few of our friends from the San Fairy Ann CC. People of note, first from the left Tich Shambrook skier extraordinaire, First lady from left Carol Gandy 2004 British Best Lady all Rounder, far right Roly Crayford, World Vets Sprint Champion. You have to be good to come skiing with the De Laune!

Of all the branches of cycle sport, it is probably the easiest to get into as no specialist equipment is needed. Its popularity lies in the fact that every rider can set his or her own standards and, unlike other forms of racing, nobody gets the feeling that they are being left behind. In a time trial, you may finish many minutes behind the event winner, yet have the satisfaction of recording a personal best time. Thus, time trials are unique, in that it is possible for everyone to be a winner. Course G25/53
Eastway “10s” The series is a favourite with many and very attractive to new riders as it allows you to judge your performance against others and more importantly against yourself over the series. Each night you ride 10 laps (10 miles) of Eastway and you must not take pace from another (i.e. you ride alone). Just turn up in good time (there are rides for 70 riders) and pay your money (plus membership for the series). Most bikes fitted with road tyres will do. John Carden of Economic Energy tells us that the record for 10 laps is 21.56, held by Ray Eden in 1994 - See forum for more Info O.M.A. E-MAIL NEWS Hi Mick, Just to say that we are now on e mail at home should you need to contact Brian. BRIAN WALLER - MIKE PEEL - JOHN DODS Paid Pat and Peter Gunnell a surprise visit on Monday,
both well and pleased to see me, yes I went on my bike, no not all the way from
Herne Bay! I was at my daughter's in Slough so took the opportunity of a ride on
roads I haven't frequented since Harry Thomas was club captain back in the late
50's (a 38 mile round trip).
PHOTOS FROM THE PAST –WHERE DO THEY FIND THEM
ALAN JACKSON – DEREK MORSE – KEN FULLER – KEN KNAPMAN
KEN FULLER – DEREK BOON – HARRY THOMAS – LEN DANBY- I of M 1952 BITS AND PIECES As I’ve mentioned before, I thought that taking on the job of clothing secretary would be fairly straightforward; not so, since, as you know, I have already had to tread very carefully when dealing with some of the older members regarding ordering the “larger” sizes of club clothing! My next problem is global warming - with the ice caps melting, the gulf stream ceasing to reach our shores and with many of our members scattered around the country living in areas vulnerable to flooding as sea levels rise - what items of club kit do I order? Will we need cold-weather clothing? Should I instead be ordering tri-trunks or wet suits in club colours? Will ‘10s’ and ‘25s’ have swimming sections in the courses, or will all events end up as triathlons? Quite a dilemma. On the subject of triathlons, I note from Harry Corbett’s article in February’s DLN that there is an entry form for the 7th Bushey Park Trial Run. It brought to mind that the centre pages of the Club History comprise a photograph of De Laune riders at the Bushey Park Meet of 1916. You may have noticed that this photograph has no caption, so how do I know the date of the photograph? Well, when clearing out the clubroom in Choumert Road I was informed that the key to the lock on the glass show cabinet was missing, so armed with my electric drill, I thought I would have the lock opened in a minute or two. Half an hour later, I had the lock removed without breaking the glass! Amongst the rubbish inside the cabinet was the original photograph with the date on the reverse. At some time I am going to have to bore the pants of members on how I cleared the clubroom; why only £225.00 was raised from the sale of the contents which, according to our accounts, were worth slightly more, and answer a few other questions from members, for example, “I left my bike in the clubroom, went down to the Wishing Well for a pint and when I returned half an hour later, it had disappeared”, or “Have you seen my wallet/bus pass/rucksack? etc. I must try and dispel this reputation I’ve acquired for throwing things away! Brian Saxton YOUR TV VIEWING FOR 2005 DATE EVENT *-Maybe? These are the events you will be watching; the ones you will be riding are on the back cover of the DLN! Note: From the New York Times of February 17th, Lance
Armstrong will more than likely be going for the hour record rather than ride
the Tour de France. He will make a first attempt at sea level in Madison Square
Garden in New York and two weeks later, at higher altitude, in Salt Lake City,
Utah – as yet dates not known. 23rd February Lance Armstrong has hinted he could attempt to break the world hour record at Manchester Velodrome this season. The six-time Tour de France winner has repeatedly stated a desire to break the mark of Britain's Chris Boardman. Lance Armstrong has announced that he will ride in this year's Tour de France and aim for a seventh straight win. It was rumoured the 34-year-old would skip the event but part of the deal with new backers Discovery Channel was he would race at least one more Tour. Discovery took over sponsorship of Armstrong's team from US Postal, who funded his first six Tour victories.
