IT’S BACK IN THE CLUB’S HANDS
AFTER 60 PLUS YEARS.

THE CLUB CAPTAIN’S BADGE?
Over the years it has often been mentioned as to the whereabouts of the
Club Captain’s Badge, but reading the minutes which are with this article
it is now clear that there were at least three Club Captain’s badges, all

th
missing! But first, there is confusion, in the 13 October 1950 minutes,
and Brian Saxton (who kindly dug out the old minutes for me, see elsewhere
in DLN ) and myself, believe it should read ‘transfer the

Our editor Mark remembers the The badge mentioned in
the May 1964 DLN shows as the original, not the 1950s one, creating more
confusion!

I have for nearly 50 years held the opinion that the original badge was on
the South London Cyclists’ Dart’s League Individual Winner’s shield. There
are some 30 odd club badges surrounding the trophy and ours stands out,
being the largest and appeared to be gold. When I won this Shield in 1968
I showed it to some of our older members, all who said ‘no that’s not it’.
Who was I to argue! Not convinced, when I won the shield again 1975 I took
it to the clubroom again in the hope someone would say ‘yes, that’s it,’ but
again, ‘no it’s not, we told you last time!’

I was still not convinced, and over the years this has festered within me,
and last year I decided that I was going to get the badge back into the
club, for as each year passed I was becoming more certain this was the
original Captain’s Badge. I had reasoned to myself and often said to other
members, “why would we have had a large badge made for any other reason,
and certainly not for the Darts League?”

From reading the minutes of 1950 it all starts to become clear, for when
I showed the badge to the older members I believe they only remembered
the replacement one from 1950.
