Sunday 21st February saw the start of a new venture for Ian, he has
decided to try his hand (or should we say legs) at running.

He started training in this sport way back in July 2015 and competed in
his first event the Tunbridge Wells ½ marathon. The course was somewhat
hilly starting in Tunbridge Wells then going into the hills of Bidborough,
Penshurst, Fordcombe, Rusthall and back to Tunbridge Wells. That area is
riddled with old quarrying sites which brings with it some hefty ups and downs.
Claire was in support on her mountain bike cutting through the lanes to do
the usual thing of shouting abuse on the hardest parts of the course – old
habits die hard ! Tony and I saw him start, we then retreated to the local
hostelry before making our way to the finish line.

I suppose because it was a completely new experience he was buzzing at
the start with excitement and just couldn't wait to get on that start line
and get running.

Ian's aim for the 13.1 miles was to finish in a time between 1 hour 25 min's
and 1 hour 30 min's and to be in the top 10% of the field of over 2000 runners.
He achieved both of his aims of finishing in a time of 1 hour Amiens 53 sec's
in 92nd position, vowing to do even better in his next outing in early April in the
Paddock Wood ½ Marathon – literality on home turf for him where the only
hills are railway bridges.
