THE PRESIDENTS REPORTS Have you ever noticed how cyclists, athletes etc have this self-destruct button? Let me explain; how many times have I said to myself ‘I have only got a mild cold, so I will go out and get the miles in’. You then end up in bed with the ‘flu. I think that lots athletes or racing cyclists have this positive attitude. You have got to have it to get results. Most athletes will say ‘I am never ill, and the health problems I have, are self-inflicted’. When I think back to my serious running days I had half my Achilles tendon replaced. (This was not down to me, but the cross-country spikes I was wearing) I then had to have a hernia operation. (This was not down to me, as I had to keep up with the leaders in a race). Cycling was just as bad. I had a dislocated shoulder by having my feet strapped in at the traffic lights and fell over. (Not my fault, the lights should have changed quicker!) The next one is the broken collarbone! To be a cyclist you have got to have one of those. I got mine in a road race when the guy in front of me came down and brought me down with him. (Also not my fault) My dear old mate Savery who seems to get an injury every time we go skiing -people come into him from the side (not his fault). He cracked it this year. He had no problems. He did not come out of the chalet! Being so positive could be one of our down falls. You say ‘I must get back on my bike as soon as possible as I must not lose this fitness’. This is after you have been in bed with the flu or broken a bone. A few weeks ago our Nick Butler came down in Richmond Park (the guy in front brought him down!) and he has ended up with a dislocated pelvis. When I had a natter on the phone he said he was told he would be on crutches for the next six weeks. He then told me he thinks he will be back sooner than that. Sounds familiar! Get well soon Nick we need you.
Those of you who have been to Newnham for our church service to remember our club members, who fell in world war one and two, will remember the name Geoffrey William Hinde who was shot down over Belgium flying a Lancaster bomber. The total crew of seven all lost their lives. The RAF records show that the bomber was shot down by flak. I searched the web for more details and from German records they claim that a German night fighter ace called Heinz Wolfgang Schnanffer who had over 100 kills to his credit shot down the Lancaster. The truth we may never know. We do know that a local war history researcher called Chris Van Kerckhover formed a committee to raise funds to build a memorial to remember the crew of that ill-fated Lancaster that crashed near his village of Westerlo just east of Antwerp. This was achieved and the memorial stone was erected and a ceremony of remembrance has taken place each year since 1998. The next one will be the 23rd of May 2004. Unfortunately I cannot make it this year but if you are interested, please contact me. Dates to remember. The 9th May which is the club championship and novice 25-mile time trial. The event starts at 8am at South Holmwood (0n the A24) just south of Dorking. We will need marshals and riders so please contact Alan Rowe (0147 4704901) for more details. Fancy getting the miles in? How about a ride down to Brighton on Sunday the 23rd May to attend the OMA lunch. All members and guests welcome. Phone Dot Fuller for details 01689 851241. That is all for now, Kav. PS do not forget the AGM on the 17th June at Herne Hill.

EITHER DOT (01689 851241) Dear Mike, (Forwarded by Mike Peel) Well run, is there any chance out of interest of getting all our London PBs in the DLN. When you think how many of us have done it including Dave Rudd etc it could well be of interest and Mark is always looking for things for the 'mag' What do you think? John. Good idea - but who will do it, who has done it? HI Mike, Perhaps you can ask in this months DLN for people to write in. There are even people like Dave Rudd's wife who although not a member is the wife of a member plus Terri who is an 'honorary' member. It was just a thought as so many of us have run in it. GREAT IDEA FROM THE GEOGHEGAN’S YOU MUST BE THE ONE FOR THE JOB JOHN

Eastway Supporters League Rumble held at Lee Valley Cycling Circuit (Eastway) on March 27 On the final lap the rider's were spread across the road and the judges held their breath and we all stood back; flying from the mass were Danny Rudd (Edwardes Cycles) and Dean Wakelin (Api.com). Rudd had the lead but Wakelin was closing, but not quite enough and the race was Rudd's by a bike length. Cats 2/3/4/J

Easter 'Fun Friday' Not quite the normal Good Friday meeting, but one that was enjoyed. The road man's race ended the day's proceedings, this 70 lap race was open to road bikes and it was a fast and very competitive affair that ignited the crowd. The first move was made Warrick Spence (LondonDynamo/Cyclefit.co.uk) and Dan Rudd (Edwardes), soon after they were joined by Bryan Taylor (VC Londres) and these three soon built a good lead. After a number of laps the break was caught and a period of relative calm took over, although the ultra fast pace soon saw the race fracturing. Guy Andrews (London Dynamo/Cyclefit.co.uk) attacked, and quickly onto his wheel was Spence and Taylor. Rudd a few laps later bridged the gap and the three once again built a lead. The crowd was now well behind the riders and they cheered and hit the boards to encourage Vince Haplern (Twickenham CC) who was chasing the leaders down. The riders said that they could tell how close Halpern was getting by the spectator's reaction and when he did join the leader's a huge cheer went up. The lead 5 lapped the field and as the 70 laps counted down, we awaited the sprint for victory. On the last lap Spence put in a dig, but into the final corner it was Taylor ahead, with Spence on his wheel whilst Rudd was coming through, past Spence to claim second behind Taylor. Phew! More, more, more! Road riders 1 hour NATIONAL Competition TT Records set in 2003
“APRIL FOOL” (Received on the 1st April) I was perusing the DLN archive this morning and looked at the article about the Freewheel contest. It occurred to me that we probably need to tighten up on this event. I'm not sure that people are treating it seriously enough. Looking at the competitors, I didn't see any evidence of skin suits, aero-bars, disc wheels, aero helmets etc. I presume it is under CTT rules since it's not "mass-start", so it's really inexcusable that people don't approach it properly. Perhaps the committee could address this with an appropriate prize list and some appropriate reference in the DLN preceding the event. I was a little disappointed not to be able to ride myself, as I had high hopes after purchasing some aero-bars and helmet, winning a pair of Zipps in a competition, carrying out my high-altitude descent training in the Alps in July and putting on 8 kilos weight aerodynamically distributed around the stomach area. Only my inability to physically put the bike and turbo-trainer (for warm-up) in the car prevented me from competing in an appropriately serious way. (For anyone wanting to take a modern and structured
approach to the 2004 event, I have some very interesting research papers from
the Clermont Ferrand Institute of Aerodynamic Research, including some
fascinating work by Mme Avril Foule)

May 4 - youngsters at 18:30, everyone else 19:15. Forwarded by Nick Butler I am looking to recruit long distance cyclists and mountain bikers for a market research group discussion in central London. I'm not sure yet of dates, venue or format, all I can say is that it will be an enjoyable and informative evening and anyone attending will be paid a travel and time incentive of roughly £30. If you think you might be able to help me with this then perhaps you could e-mail me to let me know and I can send further details as and when I get them from my client. Allison Samuel
