THE PRESIDENTS REPORTS

Who said the club is dead? For my report this month, I attended two De Laune functions, both good days out. First we had the OMA lunch on Sunday the 24th of September at the Park Wood Golf Club, organised by Mark Ballamy at one of his golf clubs. (I think he owns quite a few!!) And the club hill climb on the following Sunday.

First, the OMA lunch, which started with hand shakes and kisses all round, and that was just the men. I know we see a lot more of each other now we are retired, thanks to members like Dot Fuller, Mark Ballamy, and George Wood who organise the lunches, but it would be nice to see the faces of the younger members. (Yes Yvonne I did see you) I will repeat, all members are welcome.

Among members that it was good to see was, Brian Dacey, complete with camera. Brian was one of the top track riders we ever produced, and still is in good nick. When I asked him did he fancy having a go on the track at the next Vets World Championships, He just gave me a grin!! Look out next year.

It was good to see little Amy Thomas, (we had to put her on a cushion so we could see her) who is now living back in London. Talking about little people, Mary Dods was seen again! No stopping her now she has found second gear in her car.

The cross toasting was not up to scratch on this occasion. Alan Rowe informed me that as President I should let members know when cross toasting can commence. Well I did, but it didn't. Dear Malcolm Adams did not say a word. Linda told me he had the wrong teeth in! He should have had his smilers in and not his eaters.

The food was good, but it came in a funny order. I started with a nice soup, then a sausage on a stick, then a nice trifle, and then, roast chicken and potatoes turned up, so I had that as well! Over all, it was a good venue and a good day out, thanks Mark.

Sunday the 1st of October, The Club Hill Climb, on Titsey Hill, and another good turn out by members. The event was timed by Mark, and the riders pushed off by Brian Saxton, well not the young lady who wanted to push her self off. I do not blame her with Brian Saxton. It was said that three members of the club, (to mention no names,) had measured the course, in the dark, dressed in black, and chiseled a line in the tarmac at the start and finish. We have now got three distances for this hill, and remember the last one was measured with a twelve-inch ruler! I think you will find a full report and result in this issue by Mark.

After the event it was down to the pub at Tatsfield for drinks and eats. I counted about 20 members around our table, including Adam Glassers little boy, and Ben Nevilles little baby. Sorry I did not get the names, but you see the thinking is, if we cannot get new members, we grow our own. I think the high light of the morning was when our winner, Mat Goods mum phoned him on his mobile in front of every body in the pub, to ask him how he got on. We saw a big red face.

Two good occasions, but we have a problem as only a few younger members at the lunch, and no older members (excluding the old faithfulls like Tich Shambrook, Brian Saxton, Roy Savery) at the hill climb.

Mat Goods tells me we have a team in the Catford Hill Climb on the 15th October, so how about some support. It must be a good excuse to go in the pub afterwards.

Hope to see you all soon. Kav.

I have just read in the minutes that Katie Chown our club secretary resign at the committee meeting on the 5th October. Ed.

Hi Mike.

Sorry about the delay but the old memory got to work, and I started scribbling some of my random thoughts down, just in case there are some people who are still club-members that recall the incidents. First of all, a cheque for a copy of "A century Awheel" is on its way to you. I've made it out for 13 pounds, because I know that there's some bank catch where they sting you a bit extra for the exchange. What with the cost of postage and package you'll end up giving the book away. I wouldn't mind but I couldn't stand the embarrassment of the club financial secretary standing up at the AGM and saying that the club would have made a profit had that Geoff Margetts not suddenly risen from the dead and ordered a book! If it's not enough to cover the costs, please let me know.

Talking about memory jogging - in those days (when policemen wore top hats and beer was two pence a gallon!) we did know each other, didn't we? I can remember a Mick Peel. Are you him :-)?

Contemporaries - I've got a lot of old dusty memories tucked away in the junk-room of my brain (thinking about it, is IS my brain). The dates are a bit vague but the incidents happened. A group of us joined the De Laune in '64 - Dick Taylor, Mick Jones, Terry Clifford, Dick Gates, Dennis Sweeney, Barry Rorrison and Me.

We were all regular visitors to Herne Hill and had all decided that De Laune was "The club". I can remember being totally impressed by a picture on the front cover of "Cycling" ("Cycling and mopeds" as it then was) showing Brian Tidbury getting his wheel over the line first in a sprint at Herne Hill. It was a great picture - B.T. on the inside of the track, elbows out, head down to his right to watch his front wheel 10 inches in front of the second rider. We wanted to do that!

People remembered

Tim Hookins
He won the "Novices 25" on March 28th. 1965 I was 2nd.

Johnny Lawrence
Helped us with advice and showed us all that he could definitely ride a bike better than we could. Up until then we'd all used the small canvas shoulder bags for carrying tools, sandwiches, etc. John had discovered an ex-American Army canvas bag - the M1945 combat pack - in an army-surplus shop in the Walworth Road, into which you could pack everything. He showed it to us and, within a week, 10 of us had them. At one point the training club-run looked like an army manoeuvre. My first road race (Early season 100K - 1sts, 2nds & 3rds) was in the company of Johnny and Brain Dacey (I think that they'd taken me along so that they had something to laugh about). It seemed to me that every other rider had "England" on the back of their tracksuit, which didn't do much for my trembling bowels. Things were OK for about 30K, or until the first big hill came. Some riders changed down halfway up, some didn't. Those that changed down got rapidly left behind! Guess which group I was in? :-) Then it began to rain. I don't think that I've ever felt so miserable in my life. This was until a couple of weeks later. It was a similar sort of race, except that it rained from start to finish. The firsts caught the seconds, who caught the thirds and it was a sodden, waterlogged heap of misery that Johnny caught up with. His first remark was "Cheer up, it's going to clear up soon!" It was absolutely persisting down!! Get out of here, Lawrence - if I'm going to be a sodden, waterlogged, dirt-covered heap of misery, at least let me wallow in it and enjoy being a sodden, waterlogged, dirt-covered heap of misery!

Malcolm Adams
Great guy, I've got a couple of pictures of Malcolm, which I'll get copied and send to you. I've managed to find about 8 photos that I took on the 80th Anniversary club run (October1969). I'm getting them copied and I'll send them to you. They're nothing special but "that's how it was"

Jack Young
Lead the club runs, meeting at "The Windmill" on Clapham Common. Jack is also on a couple of the pictures of the "80th Anniversary" club run - wearing a false beard. Fancy dress was optional.

Ken Hill
How do you describe Ken Hill? He was unique, a "one-off". He used to have us in stitches with some of his remarks.

Charlie Carlton
Charlie I blame for my downfall, or at least the start of it. There was a dance at Herne Hill track and Charlie was dancing like a maniac with most of the ladies present. This was also the night that several of us decided that it would be a good idea to get the bikes and ride around the track - at about 11.00 at night, in pitch darkness. We weren't totally drunk but definitely unsteady, however we managed to avoid total disaster. Upon us reaching the finishing line a few bodies arose out of the darkness and pelted us with sandwiches, before, cackling with laughter, they melted away into the night!

Tim Hookins
Tim and I were so impressed by this (Charlie's dancing, not the sandwich throwing) that we decided to go to evening school and learn how to dance. I met some old school-friends there and started to get invited to parties. I started going out with a girl and, all in all, this led to the inevitable decline.

Reg Dawkins
Reg, abetted by Charlie Carlton, stating with utter seriousness, that he and Charlie were the very last members of a dying race of Gentlemen cyclists, not to be compared with the common riff-raff that could be found riding bikes "these days", i.e. us! Our answer (consisting of raspberries, catcalls, derisive laughter, various fingers raised in salute, etc) to this statement caused them both to express loud doubts as to whether any of us knew who our parents were.

Dennis Tarr
When I think that we actually used to go training with Dennis Tarr, it still makes me think "Blimey!" Rubbing shoulders with the gods! He'd also organised weight training at a school in Peckham, to which we used to go.

Brian Dacey
The same applies to Brian Dacey. I can remember him smiling back at Charlie Carlton at Herne Hill one evening. Charlie was shouting and calling him "Saggy" because Charlie was of the (loud) opinion that Brian could have done better in some race or other.  At least, I think that Brian was smiling. He could also have been uttering savage, evil threats between clenched teeth.

Dave Rudd
A fine fellow. Fellow apprentice with me, at Gee and Watson's, Shoe lane, Fleet Street. I got him interested in cycling. He became a good rider - I gave up (His was the sensible decision)

Alan Jackson
I've no idea when this took place but it was my only encounter with the legend himself - Alan Jackson. Wherever we were going (Christmas lunch?) there was a club run, and, at one point there was a "prime" somewhere or other - "Last one past the dustbin has to pay for the beer", or something similar to strike sheer terror into the hearts of cyclists. The club run got faster and sort of spread out over the road a bit when about 5/6 riders came hammering past on the wrong side of the road, with Alan Jackson coming past us like he meant it, but laughing his head off. The speed was bloody impressive. No wonder Baldini was scared of him as I said; I've got no idea when this took place. Maybe check with Alan Rowe, Brian Dacey, John Kavanagh, Brian Tidbury, and Roy Savery

Fred Peachey & Tony Peachey
Friendly guys. Did Fred die? I saw the reference to the "Fred Peachey 25"on the site

John Cheshire
Another person who influenced my downfall. I don't remember him riding much but he had a big motorbike, which I saw him use for motor pacing on the track. What the occasion was escapes me. I ended up with a Moto-Guzzi 950, which I sold before I left for Germany in 1980.

Mack Cole
Mack was a camera fanatic, and was always taking lots of photos. Were any used in the book?

Alan Rowe
Arch-hooligan :-), always under our secret suspicion of having taken part in, and probably leading, the sandwich-throwing incident at Herne Hill Track. He was very funny, never unhappy, and always cheerful.

Herne Hill Track
The "De Laune" section of the stands at Herne Hill track, to the right of the main stand, facing the track. Terry Clifford decided that we weren't showing enough support and so we made a banner out of a bed sheet and two large poles, "De Laune" being painted in large black letters on the sheet. This was unveiled to loud cheers on either a Monday or Wednesday evening, just as an astonished Brian Dacey and Dennis Tarr rode past "our" part of the stand. They tried to pretend that they didn't know us! I think that a photo exists of the banner somewhere; at least I remember a photo being taken (by Mack Cole?)

Dinner and Dances
At one dinner and dance, after the speeches, Tom Keating stood up and proclaimed that he "would like to take wine with any gentleman that had brought his darts with him tonight" I think three people stood up!  An incident a group of us were out training one evening and met a tricycle rider at Green Street Green. We carried on up past Badgers Mount and started to go down Poll Hill, We were going a fair speed when the trike started to get a speed wobble. Those in front were alerted by the shouts of us behind, and there was the grating and clicking of front and rear mechs. as the front riders changed up to 52 /15 / 14 / 13 - any bloody big gear! - to power down the hill to get away from the vibrating monster coming down behind them. This was accompanied by the sound of 4 sets of Mafac brakes slamming on as we 4 behind decided that staying in formation around a vibrating, shuddering trike was not one of the most sensible things to do, and that it might be better to watch the impending disaster from a safe distance. The betting was on that he would leave the road to the left and disappear over the side of the hill. He got the trike down to the bottom of the hill ok but decided that he wasn't going on with us. White-faced, he headed back up Poll Hill and we went on to Westerham.

I've been rambling on! I think that the main memory I have of the "De Laune" is what fun it all was. If any of the above mentioned people are still around, send them my best wishes. They, together with people that I can remember but can't name, all belong to a time, which I happily remember.

Looking forward to reading the book

Best regards

Geoff

(Thanks Mike for forwarding this mail on, it always nice to hear from a past or old member of the club. Ed.)

Dear Alan

Just received the DLN from my old friend Brian late the 'Queens'.

Well done or as we are now in the EU it could be recorded as 'ausgezeichnet' or 'remarquable/exceptionnel'. Whatever, sterling work, congratulations!

As we live north of Watford I will not be attending the OMA Lunch on the 24th September but I would ask you to pass on the words, from a telegram of mine, written in the the DLN of January 1954, whilst serving in the 'Fatherland' to the members at the Annual Dinner 1953 (Express Hall, Clapham Junction)."With you in 'spirit' if not in 'spirits' ". These sentimental words, still, hold fast in the year 2000.

Go forth, there are more conquests in the future!

Yours, as ever

Len Danby

Hi! Len

Thank you very much for your very kind appreciation, that meant a lot to me,( what ever the language) coming as it did from a blast from the past! It was good to hear from you. I didn't realize that Brian was an old "Queen" you just can't tell can you?

I am disappointed that you will not be attending the OMA lunch but even though you live North of the border it isn't a day's journey to get there. I am racing in Essex in the morning and I am still going SHAME ON YOU!!!

All the best in whatever you do, try to make the next function.

Yours truly

Alan (Club Vets Champion)

(Sorry Bill, this item should have been included in the last mag Ed.)

On Thursday night (17thAug) we held our first meeting of the working party to put together proposals for the future of the Clubroom. (As we have only just started our investigations there is little to report just yet - we will be meeting again at the Clubroom on Thursday 31st. All are welcome to become involved.)

As a preliminary to our work we thought it essential to establish just where the Club is going in terms of membership, long-term strategy, and what form Club meetings will be likely to take in the future.

At the same time the BCF has been looking at it's long term strategy, as regards attracting new riders into the sport. Our Club is typical of a great many in the country, with a falling number of new riders - ours now has NO racing members under the age of 20.

The BCF has put into place a scheme called Impruve - sponsored by the Prudential - to encourage youth development across the country. I have written about this in the DLN on a previous occasion, so I won't go into very great detail about it here, except that it involves organising clubs such as ours to put into place training sessions for boys and girls starting at about age 10. The committee has given the go-ahead for four members (so far) to take coaching courses in order that we may become involved in Impruve.

Five clubs across London and Kent now have Impruve status - the Hillingdon Slipstreamers, Team Darenth (at Dartford), Victory CC (at Rainham), Lee Valley Youth CC and recently Catford CC. Many of you have already reported seeing large Catford CC club runs going out at the weekends. This can happen at De Laune. It will take some work getting it going, but experience shows that these schemes quickly take off, and that parents soon become involved - lessening the workload on volunteers.

I have asked Neil Simpson, the BCF Regional Development Officer for Greater London, to come to our Clubroom on Thursday September 21st at 8.30pm, (this date is being rearranged) to give us a talk on Impruve, what it involves, how it will be financed (a grant is available from the Prudential), and how to recruit young people to take part. He is very keen to help us in all aspects of putting the scheme together.

I urge people to attend, and to please tell others whose names are not on this email list. I believe this is of primary importance to the future of the Club.

The climb was over a slightly longer coarse (706yards) than it has been for the last few year (18yards longer) but still not as long as the coarse that Ken Fuller set his record of 1.59.2 way back in 1962.

Matt Goodes set a new record for the shorter coarse, and today his time is again a new record for this distance and the fastest this century.

Dear All,

I have rearranged for Neil Simpson to attend our Special General Meeting on Thurs 19th October to talk about how we can begin a Development Programme to attract new members to our Club, and join the BCF's Impruve scheme to recruit and retain new members into the Club.

As a reminder, the agenda includes:
1) Election of Memorial Clubroom Trustees
2) Report and recommendations from the Clubroom Working Party on their investigations into the disposal or otherwise of the building.
3) A general discussion about the future of the Clubroom.

I have asked Neil to speak and answer questions between items 2 and 3, which I hope will give some food for thought for the discussion.

I urge people to make every effort to attend. I am sure that it will be of huge benefit to the Club to undertake such a programme. The timing is also excellent following our Olympic successes, and what are set to be a widely covered World Championships later this month at Manchester. We have a responsibility now to build on this success at a local level, and re-vitalise the Club at the same time. It would be a serious error to miss this opportunity.

Best regards
Bill

CLUB TROPHIES
You may recall that in September's DLN, Jeremy Briggs informed the membership that in future the club's silverware, medals and engraving, etc will become the responsibility of the club archivist.

This will be a good opportunity to catch up with the trophy engraving and also coincides with Mike Peel's efforts to bring the club handbook up to date, as well as maintaining a record of the trophies and past holders on the club website.

Additionally, errors such as the one pointed out by Arthur How re the 24-hour single team record can be rectified.

O.M.A.NEWS

Our last 'Do' for this year. We all met up at Marjorie & Mark's home in Warlingham, for coffee, the morning started off dry and I'm sure M & M were hoping that we would all be able to be out in the garden in the sunshine! But - no luck, it started to rain heavily so we were all confined indoors - quite a crowd 36 of us milling around - but luckily there was plenty of rooms to 'mill in'. Thank you very much M&M for inviting us all round for coffee and chats, it was a nice way to begin the day together.

We all found our way to the new venue at Park Wood Golf Club in Tatsfield, the Clubhouse was in a lovely setting with views over to Westerham - well there would have been lovely views if there hadn't been so much mist and rain, there was a large balcony, which we could not take advantage of to have our pre-lunch drinks on, ah well, we should be used to the British weather by now.

Eventually we all sat down for lunch, our thanks to Mark for the wines on all tables. It was Good to see Amy (nee Thomas) again, and also Barbara, Carol & David - the 'GIRLS' being Marks' sisters, so, needless to say we caught up on lots of Gossip. We missed our 'Golden Oldies' Doreen &-Bill, we send our good wishes to you both, especially Dor who is at present in Hospital, Bill keeps fit by cycling to visit her most days, also manages to get a 'spare' lunch whilst there. We also heard at the lunch that SEZ LES, has been ill with a does of Shingles - hope you will be 'rash free' soon Les.

The end of another enjoyable day out with good friends, hope to see a lot of you at the Clubhouse on the 19th October for the Special Meeting, which is mainly to decide on the future of our Clubhouse.

The date for NEWNHAM will be 19th November, we will be booking lunch at the local Hostelry, namely 'The George' so if you would like to join the party after the Memorial Service, please Phone me on 01639 851241. Further details in next DLN usually we gather in the Pub Car Park around 10.00, for the Service at 10.30. Then lunch at 12.30.
