I was watching Secret Britain (BBC 1) on Wednesday 6th April and out of the
blue appears Lady Sondes (Abraham De Laune married Anne Sondes).
Of course Lady Sondes is not a direct relation (the peerage was first
conferred in 1880) but she does still own part of the Lees Court Estate
which was Anne's brother George's estate in the 1600’s.
Apparently there are tunnels (deneholes-chalk caves) under the estate and
the adjoining cricket field at Sheldwich, and Lady Sondes went down a vertical
shaft (30 feet) and gave a guided tour.
As deneholes have been there since the 1700’s and it is most probable
that George was responsible for them.
