CHAIRMAN On May 23rd 1891, the gates of the London County
ROY SAVERY Athletics Ground were opened to the public for the
01959 777455 first time, on a site between Herne Hill and North
Dulwich. Inside a rolled ballast cycle track, there was
SECRETARY a cinder running track and a rugby pitch. A brick and
JEREMY WHITE wooden pavilion provided some seating and changing
101 Manor Park facilities.

TREASURER In September 2001, I started work as manager of
VAL PEACHEY the track. The cycle track had been replaced several
63 Beverley Road times over the years, with at least two wooden
tracks, and asphalt one, and a bitumen one for the
Barming Olympic Games in 1948. This was endlessly patched
Maidstone up until 1991, when it received a centenary rebuild to
Kent ME16 9DU metric dimensions (450m and with steeper
01622 727649 bankings) and a ‘state of the art’ epoxy screed
surface which was supposed to be all-weather, but
MEMBERSHIP sadly suffered from an algae build-up each winter
DAVID HAGGART which required annual cleaning.
