Turbo - something different
by Nigel Scales
Some of you probably don't much like turbo training. Some of you may hate
it (especially if you followed "Doc" Hutchinson's training lead to prep for a
12hr TT and decided copy his idea of a training 12 on his turbo... - no, I can't
manage to visualise the true horror either, though I guess it conditioned the
"contact points", eliminated traffic and puncture risks and simplified nutrition
and bathroom breaks..)
So spare a thought for pro Petr Vakoc after he broke his spine in a training
crash with a truck in January. He's not allowed to ride seated, so he's
suspended a bike vertically from the ceiling with the back wheel on the floor
fixed to a turbo and lies on dining room chairs to pedal. Thinking about the
logistics, it can't be a perfect solution and must be tricky to apply power but
I guess, as he says, it lets him move his legs. Chapeau! (And I don't wamt to
hear any whinges about turbos from now on )
BTW - Petr's toughest regular training session (normally) is 40/20 intervals.
For anyone unfamiliar with this aspect of masochism, that's 40 seconds
really hard followed by 20 seconds recovery, repeated 10 times. He usually
does 3 of these 10 minute sets separated by 10 minutes recovery. The more
mathematically gifted amongst you will of course have realised that as each
set is 10 x 1 minute of interval/recovery you could adjust the total to ease
into it - I'm thinking of going for 3/57s myself - mainly because I don't think
getting a "really hard" effort out in less than 3 seconds is feasible - might
even have to go to 5/55s or higher..
