to attend, but infirmity and demise is taking its toll. Younger members
should remember that without the sacrifice of so many young men and
women during the two World Wars our lives would have been a whole lot
different, and some of you may not have even been born. I make no apologies
for repeating myself, as I said much the same last year. None of us at the
service personally knew those members who died, so to say it is in the past
and you did not know them, I personally find very sad. Our great club should
continue to show its respect in the future for those gallant members who
laid down their lives for us, but I wonder if it will!
The De Laune Cycling Club is not just about cycling it is also about
sealing lifetime friendships and the upholding of traditions which made our
club great in the first place. You don’t survive 125 years without them,
many clubs are envious of our history and pedigree, also the link to Newnham,
home of our founder is well known. There are plenty of racing teams, we are
not one of them. Enough said, please give this some serious thought, as
one Sunday out of a year is not too much to ask, is it?
On a lighter note, the Belgium Night was, once again, a great success.
Special thanks to Cliff, Carole and young Cassia for preparing a great meal,
also thanks to all the waiters, Steve, George, Simon, Tich and the ‘bar
staff’, Stack, Kav. Thanks Kav for organising it along with the hard work
of the ‘backroom boys’, with Stack in charge, for the decorating the room
and no doubt the clearing up, along with Mike and Tich, thanks Guys .
Jayne and Jules were in charge of the prize presentation, and I managed
to surprise Jayne with the presentation of the Silverdale How Shield in
recognition of all the hard work she has put in this year. Hope our new
members, Jamie and Jeremy enjoyed themselves and I for one am looking
forward to next year’s gathering already. Hopefully there is a fuller report
elsewhere, there are some great pictures on our website, so Dot you will
have to go around to Suzanne’s to see who was there, or have you bought
a computer yet? Finally, thanks Mike for producing the excellent table plan
and menu cards.
